Students in the classroom

Highline is financially stable because of steady enrollment and difficult budget adjustments made in recent years. To maintain that stability, the proposed 2026–27 budget includes about $8 million in reductions, including central office reductions, while prioritizing resources that directly support students and classrooms.

Parkside Elementary students and staff spent the day at Waskowitz for a schoolwide field trip planned by Parkside teachers and school leaders. After six years, this end-of-year field trip is now a tradition that connects students to each other, to hands-on science in nature and to their own potential.

This year, our secondary schools focused on helping students grow as readers, thinkers and speakers in every subject area. Students had more opportunities to read challenging texts, build vocabulary, discuss ideas with classmates and connect learning to their own lives and experiences. Teachers also worked to create classrooms where students feel seen, heard, and supported.

Highline is continuing to build schools where every student feels supported, included, and able to participate. This work is underway in all elementary schools and will expand to middle schools in 2026–27. We recently saw inclusion in action at Field Day at Mount Rainier High School, where students from Adapted PE classes and peers from across Highline came together for a day of movement, connection and celebration.

students present cell phone policy feedback

Members of the Superintendent’s Student Leadership Team shared their recommendations for a mobile device policy with the Highline School Board at its June 3 meeting. Their message: students recognize that phones can be a distraction, but any policy should be developed with students, not just for them.
