Back-to-School Checklist

11 Things to Do Before School Starts

Time to gear up! It is almost time for school to start. Here are 11 things to do as you get ready for the first day of school.

1. Understand Health & Safety Measures

Our safety expectations and plan are based on current guidance from local, state and federal public health agencies. Each layer of protection keeps us safer. Review our health and safety guidelines. By practicing them all every day, we can keep each other as safe as we can be!

2. Attend the Back-to-School Family Webinar

Join us for an informational webinar for families on Monday, August 30 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. to learn about what to expect for the 2021-22 school year. We'll post a recording you can watch later if you can't make it Monday evening.

3. Find Your Bus Route

Find your bus stop and pick-up/drop-off time using our online tool. Please check back before the first day of school. Minor adjustments to routes could be made.

4. Review the School Calendar

The first day of school is Thursday, September 2 for students in grades 1-12. Kindergarten students start on Wednesday, September 8. The first day for preschool students is Tuesday, September 14. See other important dates.

5. Pick Up a Device

Every Highline student has access to a digital device to engage in learning. Many devices have already been distributed. If you need a new or replacement device, reach out to your school office. If you need a device repaired, please bring it to the school office for review and repair. If you need internet assistance, please connect with your school for a hotspot. For school supplies, check your school's website for a list of items.

6. Complete Online Verification

Having up-to-date student information is important. Verifying your information ensures we have an updated home address, phone number, emergency contact and health information on file. All of these items help schools keep students safe while at school. To update your info, log into ParentVUE through an internet browser.

7. Download Our Mobile App

Download the ParentVUE mobile app to see grades, attendance, assignments and more. ParentVUE lets parents and guardians view their child’s assignments, grades and attendance, message teachers and review student information. You will be able to see records for all your children at any Highline school with a single login. You can also send messages in your own language, and they will be automatically translated.

8. Check Out School Menus & Register for Free Meals

All school meals are available at no cost this year. Fall in love with our scratch-made dishes and local ingredients prepared in a balanced meal. Even though free meals are for everyone, please complete a free and reduced-price meal application to help us maintain school funding and access other discounts and benefits. Families at one of our Community Eligibility Provision schools can fill out an income survey instead of an application.

9. Follow us on Social Media

Follow Highline on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Share photos of you getting ready for the school year and the first day of school using the hashtag #TeamHighline. We’ll use your tagged photos on our website in a fun back-to-school video.

10. Know Your Rights & Responsibilities

Review the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook

11. Practice Getting Up On Time

Whether you are learning in person or from home, prepare for school by setting the alarm and waking the family up on time. Being at school on time every day is important for staying on track academically.
