Panorama Frequently Asked Questions

Creating a safe and supportive learning environment is imperative to student learning and achievement. To learn more about student experiences at school, we are asking students for their feedback using a survey administered by Panorama.

Highline values feedback from our students and will use the feedback to refine school culture and instructional experiences based on what students share. The survey will also provide us with information about students’ perceptions of their skills in areas like managing conflict, relationship building with peers, and understanding their emotions. With this information, teachers will provide more tailored, high quality, rigorous learning experiences that meet the needs of our students and prepare them for college and career.

A significant body of research shows that when students have supportive relationships and opportunities to develop and practice social skills across many different contexts, academic learning accelerates and student behaviors improve. For example, results from a landmark meta-analysis that looked across 213 studies involving more than 270,000 students found that:

• Interventions that address five core competencies (self-awareness, social awareness, relationship-building skills, self-management, and responsible decision-making) increased students’ academic performance by 11 percentile points, compared to students who did not participate.
• Students participating in instruction related to those competencies showed improved classroom behavior, an increased ability to manage stress and depression, and better attitudes about themselves, others, and school.
• Additional meta-analyses echoed these findings. Consistency across independent research teams offers strong support that well-implemented programs that focus on these skills are beneficial. (retrieved from Durlak et al., 2011).

The survey will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The survey will be taken during the school day in October and January 2024. Students in grades 3-5 will take it with support from teachers. Middle and high school students will take the survey independently during the school day in October and in May 2024.

Administrators will use the data to determine school-level strengths and areas that need more focus. This allows school leaders to identify programming needs to enhance the school experience. The survey also provides a first look at areas in which students may need extra support. Teachers may collect more information to understand their strengths and needs. This information helps teachers work with parents/guardians to plan targeted instruction or intervention if needed. Results support skill development for whole classrooms, small groups or individual students. This way, all students have the opportunity to build the skills they need to be successful.

Teachers, counselors and administrators will see results.This will include classroom grade-level teachers, district and building-level administrator(s), school counselor(s), special education teacher(s) and intervention specialist(s). Student data is kept confidential and used only for Highline educational purposes. Highline follows board policy for data governance and security.

Yes, results are available upon request. Parents/guardians should contact their student’s school to request a copy of their results. 

If you do not want your student to take part in the survey, you can opt out.  Please contact your student’s school to discuss the opt-out process.
